Carpet Moths and Wool Carpet: Everything You Need To Know

Carpet moths are a common discussion point from customers considering wool carpet. It's a fair concern - wool is the fibre moths are most attracted to, and an untreated infestation can cause real damage. But with the right knowledge, carpet moths are manageable, and they needn't put you off the natural flooring.

Here's an honest guide to what carpet moths are, hot to spot them, how to prevent and treat them, and - most importantly for flooring customers - how your choice of flooring affects your risk.

What are Carpet Moths?

The moth most commonly responsible for carpet damage in UK homes is the case-bearing carpet moth (Tinea pellionella). It's a small, buff coloured moth typically around 5-8mm in length, that rarely flies and tends to run along the floor rather than flutter around lights. The adults themselves cause no damage - it's the larvae that are the problem.

Carpet moth larvae feed on keratin, the protein found in natural animal fibres. That's why wool, silk, cashmere and feathers are their preferred targets. Pure plant-based fibres - sisal, seagrass, coir, jute - contain no keratin at all, and moths have no interest in them.

 

The Carpet Moth Lifecycle

Understanding the lifecycle is key to understanding why the prevention and treatment advice below actually works.

A female moth lays between 40 and 200 microscopic eggs, depositing them deep in the carpet pile, along skirting boards, or in any dark undisturbed spot where larvae will find a ready food supply. In a warm UK home, those eggs hatch within 4 to 10 days - in cooler conditions, hatching may take up to three weeks.

Once hatched, the larvae begin feeding immediately. This is the only stage at which damage occurs - adult moths have no mouthparts and cannot eat your carpet. The larval stage can last anywhere from two months to two years depending on temperature and food availability, which is why an undetected infestation can cause so much damage before you notice it.

After feeding sufficiently, larvae spin a cocoon and pupate over roughly 8 to 10 days before emerging as adult moths, which live for around two to four weeks - long enough to mate and begin the cycle again.

The practical implication of this lifecycle is important: a warm home can support multiple generations of carpet moths in a single year, accelerating through summer and slowing in winter. Early detection and consistent vacuuming are your most powerful tools precisely because they break this cycle before it takes hold.

How to Spot a Carpet Moth Problem

Moths prefer dark, undisturbed areas where they can feed without being disturbed. The places to check are under furniture, along skirting boards, in the corners of rooms, and along stair edges beneath carpet runners.

Signs to look for:

  • Small, irregular bald patches in the carpet pile, particularly in darker or less trafficked areas
  • Silky web like threads or small fibrous cases near the base of the carpet pile

  • Creamy white larvae, roughly 5-10mm long, often the colour of the carpet fibre they've been eating

  • Adult moths running along the floor rather than flying - small, pale buff in colour

  • Frass (fine granular debris) beneath or around affected areas

The earlier you spot these signs, the easier the problem is to deal with. A small infestation caught early rarely causes significant damage.

How to Get Rid of Carpet Moths

If you find signs of carpet moths, act quickly. The larvae develop faster in warm conditions, so summer is often when infestation tend to escalate.

Step 1 - Vacuum thoroughly. This is the single most effective immediate action. Vacuum the whole room including all edges, corners, and under furniture. Dispose of the vacuum contents immediately outside the house.

Step 2 - Move all furniture. Pull out sofas, wardrobes and beds to expose the carpet underneath. Larvae are almost always concentrated in these hidden spots. Vacuum thoroughly once everything is moved, paying particular attention to the corners and edges.

Step 3 - Consider using an insecticide spray formulated for carpet moths. Look for products containing permethrin or transfluthrin - both are proven active ingredients against moth larvae and eggs. Apply along the edges of the room, into corners, and under furniture, following the manufacturer's instructions carefully. Two treatments two weeks apart are typically recommended to catch any newly hatched larvae that survive the first round. 

Step 4 - Check other textiles. Infestations don't always start or stay in the carpet. Check wool clothing, blankets, soft furnishings and rugs, particularly anything stored in wardrobes or boxes that it's regularly disturbed.

Step 5 - Maintain a regular vacuuming habit. Once identified, consistent vacuuming - particularly around the edges and under furniture - is your best long term defence. See the prevention section below for why this works.

 

How to Prevent Carpet Moths

Prevention is significantly easier than dealing with an established infestation. The approach is straightforward once you understand what you're trying to achieve: remove eggs before they hatch, and disrupt the conditions moths need to complete their lifecycle.

Vacuum regularly and thoroughly. Eggs hatch in 4 to 10 days in a warm home. Vacuuming every week - with particular attention to the edges of rooms, skirting boards, and under furniture - means you are physically removing eggs before they can hatch into larvae. Remove the larvae and surviving eggs consistently enough, and you break the cycle entirely without any chemical intervention. This is why an undisturbed room is a moth's ideal environment: a rarely vacuumed corner sunder a sofa, or a stair edge under a fitted runner that never gets lifted, gives larvae exactly the conditions they need to feed undisturbed for months.

Move furniture periodically. Even moving a sofa to vacuum underneath every month or two makes a significant difference.

Keep rooms well ventilated. Moths prefer warm, humid, still conditions. Good airflow helps make your home less hospitable.

Use pheromone moth traps. Pheromone traps work by releasing a synthetic scent that mimics a female moth, attracting adult males onto a sticky surface. By reducing the number of males available to mate, they help slow the breeding cycle over time. Their most valuable role, however, is as an early warning system. A trap placed in a dark undisturbed corner - under a sofa, behind a wardrobe - will tell you whether you have an active moth presence before any carpet damage appears. If you're consistently catching moths, you know to increase your vacuuming and investigate more thoroughly. If the traps remain clear, you can be reasonably confident things are under control. Replace traps every six to eight weeks as the pheromone loses potency, and keep them away from lavender or cedar products which can interfere with their effectiveness.

Inspect periodically. If you have wool carpet, check the edges and under furniture a few times a year - particularly in spring and early summer when moth activity increases.

 

How Your Flooring Choice Affects Your Risk

Not all flooring carries the same moth risk, and it's worth being specific - because the right choice at the outset can save a lot of trouble later.

Should I Avoid Wool Carpet Because of Moths?

Our honest answer is no - and we'd say that even if we only sold Sisal.

Carpet moths affect a minority of homes, and the vast majority of wool carpet owners never experience a significant problem. With a sensible vacuuming routine, periodic checks, and a pheromone trap in any room you're particularly concerned about, wool carpet is entirely manageable. The warmth, air quality benefits, natural resilience and sheer beauty of wool carpet makes it worth it for most customers.

That said, if you've had a serious moth infestation previously, or if you have a room that genuinely can't be vacuumed thoroughly and regularly, it's worth having an honest conversation about whether a plant-based alternative might suit you better.
