What is engineered oak flooring?
Engineered oak flooring is a multi-layer floor construction with a real oak top layer — called the wear layer — bonded to a stable core of cross-layered plywood. Unlike solid wood, the layered construction minimises the natural expansion and contraction of timber in response to temperature and humidity changes, making it a more stable and versatile choice for modern homes.
The result is a floor that looks, feels and behaves like real oak — because the surface you see and walk on is real oak — but with greater dimensional stability and broader installation compatibility, including over underfloor heating systems.
It's also far more sustainable, premium grade oak used for flooring is in increasingly short supply and an engineered oak floor will use far less oak to create the same effect as a traditional solid oak flooring.
Engineered oak is not laminate. Laminate uses a photographic print layer to simulate the appearance of wood. Engineered oak has a genuine timber wear layer that can be sanded and refinished over its lifetime, giving it a lifespan that far exceeds laminate or vinyl alternatives.
Why choose FSC and PEFC certified oak flooring?
FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) and PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) are the two leading international standards for responsible forest management. Certification by either organisation independently verifies that timber has been sourced from forests managed for long-term ecological health — covering biodiversity, workers' rights, and the rights of local communities, as well as sustainable harvesting practices.
Dual certification to both FSC and PEFC — as carried by the entire Woodland Oak range — represents the highest level of independent verification available for timber sourcing. It means the provenance of every plank is traceable and audited, not simply a marketing claim.
For homeowners and specifiers who want to be confident in the environmental credentials of their flooring choice, FSC and PEFC certification provides that assurance in a way that no unverified "sustainable sourcing" claim can match.
Woodland Oak — the range at a glance
The Woodland Oak range is available in two formats:
Woodland Oak Plank — available in three colours across two thicknesses. Hearth Oak and Honey Oak are available in 14mm and 20mm. Mistwood Oak is available in 20mm only. The plank format can be installed as a floating floor, fully stuck down or secret nailed.
Woodland Oak Herringbone — available in three colours at 15mm thickness. Barley Oak, Silverleaf Oak and Thicket Oak. The herringbone parquet format is recommended for full glue down installation to achieve the precise, crisp finish the pattern demands.
All products across both ranges are compatible with underfloor heating and carry a 25-year warranty.
Frequently asked questions
Is engineered oak flooring real wood?
Yes. The surface layer of every Woodland Oak floor is real European oak — the timber you see and walk on is genuine wood, not a printed or synthetic finish. The core layers beneath are constructed from cross-layered plywood, which provides stability and reduces the natural movement of the timber. Only the surface layer is oak, but that is the only layer you will ever see or touch.
What is the difference between FSC and PEFC certification?
Both FSC and PEFC are independent, internationally recognised certification bodies that verify responsible forest management. FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) was established in 1993 and is widely regarded as the most rigorous standard globally. PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) was established in 1999 and is the world's largest forest certification system by area of certified forest. The Woodland Oak range carries both certifications, providing the highest level of independent verification available for timber sourcing.
Can engineered oak flooring be sanded and refinished?
Yes — all products in the Woodland Oak range can be sanded and refinished. The real oak wear layer is thick enough to withstand light sanding over the lifetime of the floor, allowing you to refresh the surface finish if it becomes worn or scratched. This significantly extends the lifespan of the floor compared to laminate or vinyl alternatives, which cannot be refinished at all.
Is engineered oak flooring suitable for underfloor heating?
Yes. All products in the Woodland Oak range are compatible with underfloor heating systems. The engineered construction — with its cross-layered plywood core — is more dimensionally stable than solid wood in response to the temperature changes that underfloor heating produces, making it a more reliable choice than solid timber over a heated subfloor.
What rooms is Woodland Oak engineered flooring suitable for?
Woodland Oak is suitable for most rooms in the home including living rooms, hallways, dining rooms, kitchens and bedrooms. It is not recommended for bathrooms, wet rooms or other areas with high or persistent moisture levels, as prolonged exposure to moisture can affect the timber and plywood construction. For occasional splashes — such as in a kitchen — the floor will perform well provided spills are wiped up promptly.
What is the difference between the 14mm and 20mm plank options?
Both thicknesses use the same FSC and PEFC certified Slovakian oak wear layer and are available in Hearth Oak and Honey Oak. The 14mm option is well suited to renovation projects where floor height needs to be kept to a minimum — for example where the new floor needs to meet an existing floor level in an adjacent room. The 20mm option has a more substantial, solid-wood feel underfoot and is the better choice where floor height is not a constraint. Mistwood Oak is only available in the 20mm thickness.
What is the difference between the plank and herringbone formats?
The plank format lays in straight parallel rows — the most common and versatile layout, suited to most rooms and interior styles. The herringbone format arranges rectangular parquet blocks in the classic V-shaped herringbone pattern, which adds a strong visual and architectural element to a room. Herringbone is particularly effective in hallways and living rooms and kitchens. The two formats use the same certified oak source but are distinct products with different installation requirements — the plank can be floated, glued or secret nailed, while the herringbone is recommended for full glue down installation.
How long does Woodland Oak engineered flooring last?
All products in the Woodland Oak range carry a 25-year warranty. With proper care and maintenance — regular sweeping, occasional damp mopping with a wood-appropriate cleaner, and prompt attention to spills — the floor should perform well throughout that period and beyond. The ability to sand and refinish the real oak wear layer means the floor can be refreshed if surface wear becomes visible over time.
Can I order samples of Woodland Oak flooring?
Yes — samples are available for all colours across both the plank and herringbone ranges. We recommend ordering samples before purchasing to see the colour and grain character of the oak in your own home, under your own lighting conditions.
