Sisal Carpet FAQs

What is sisal carpet made from?

Sisal carpet is woven from the fibre of the Agave sisalana plant, a succulent grown mainly in Brazil, Tanzania and Kenya. It is a natural plant fibre with a firm, textured surface, and one of the most durable natural carpet fibres available.

Which styles of sisal carpet do you sell?

We sell three styles. Sisal Herringbone has a flat, crisp herringbone weave. Sisal Small Boucle and Orient Boucle have a textured boucle weave with a slightly softer feel. Easy Fit Horizon and Meridian can be stretch fitted like a standard carpet, with no specialist underlay or gluing.

Which rooms is sisal carpet suitable for?

Sisal suits living rooms, bedrooms, hallways, landings, stairs, studies and dining rooms. Use it with caution in conservatories with high humidity and bright sunlight. Avoid bathrooms, kitchens, wet rooms and rooms prone to flooding, because sisal is sensitive to moisture.

Is sisal carpet good for stairs?

Yes. Sisal is one of the most popular natural fibres for staircases and stair runners, and the herringbone weave is especially common because of its tight, flat construction. Professional fitting and the right underlay are essential on stairs.

How do I clean sisal carpet?

Clean regularly with a quality vacuum cleaner. Sisal resists dry dirt well but is sensitive to liquids, so blot spills straight away with a dry cloth and do not rub or add water. Treat stains with a specialist cleaner for natural fibre carpets, and never use a steam cleaner on sisal.

How is sisal carpet fitted, and which underlay do I need?

Standard sisal is fitted by the double stick method: the underlay is stuck to the subfloor and the sisal is fully stuck to the underlay, so it cannot move with changes in temperature. Our Olympic underlay is made for sisal, seagrass and jute. Easy Fit sisal is the exception and is stretch fitted.

How long does sisal carpet last?

In normal home use with regular vacuuming, a well-maintained sisal carpet can last 15 to 20 years. Its resistance to heavy foot traffic makes it well suited to hallways, landings and stairs.

Can I order a sample of sisal carpet?

Yes, and we recommend it. Samples cost £1 each and are delivered free by Royal Mail, usually within 7 days. Natural fibres vary slightly between batches, so use the sample as a guide to colour and texture.
