The Herdwick is one of Britain's most distinctive and resilient sheep breeds — native to the rugged fells of the Lake District, adapted over centuries to one of the harshest upland environments in the country. It produces a wool that reflects exactly that character: tough, dense and naturally well suited to the demands of carpet making. The Cumbrian Loop is built on that foundation.

Made from 100% undyed wool yarn, the Cumbrian Loop is a soft and textured loop pile carpet whose colour comes entirely from the natural variation in the fleece itself. There are no chemical dyes, no flame retardants, no moth prevention treatments — the pile is completely free from synthetic chemical treatments. The pile is also plastic-free. Six colourways — named after the Lake District fells from which the breed originates — span a range of warm and cool natural tones, from the softer, greyer notes of Blencathra and Catbells to the deeper, earthier tones of Scafell and Bowfell.

The loop construction gives the Cumbrian Loop a soft, cushioned feel underfoot that works particularly well in living rooms and bedrooms where comfort is the priority. It is equally well suited to hallways and stairs, where the natural resilience of wool means it holds its appearance well under regular foot traffic.

The Cumbrian Loop and Cumbrian Herringbone Weave are made from exactly the same yarn, spun from the same wool, in the same six colourways. This means the two products can be used together across different areas of the same home with perfect colour continuity — the herringbone making a design statement on the stairs and landing, the loop providing a softer, quieter backdrop in the living room or bedroom. It's one of the most practical and visually coherent ways to carpet a whole home in a single, connected scheme.

The carpet uses a lightweight Envirobac backing that uses significantly less material than a standard carpet backing while maintaining full performance.

As with all natural fibre products, we recommend ordering samples before purchasing — the undyed colourways are best assessed in your own space and under your own lighting conditions. Natural variation between fleece batches means colour can vary subtly over time, which is a characteristic of natural material.
