The Cumbrian Herringbone Weave is a flatweave herringbone carpet made from 100% undyed wool — entirely free from synthetic dyes and chemical treatments. Its bold geometric pattern makes it a natural choice for stairs and landings, and its shared yarn and colourways with the Cumbrian Loop make the two products the ideal pairing for a coordinated whole-home scheme.

The herringbone is one of the most enduring patterns in textile history — a bold, directional geometry that has suited everything from tweed suiting to parquet flooring for centuries. In the Cumbrian Herringbone Weave, that classic pattern is woven from 100% undyed wool sourced from Herdwick sheep, into a flatweave carpet that is as hardwearing as it is visually striking.

Herdwick sheep are native to the Lake District fells — a tough, hardy breed whose wool has been prized for its density and durability for generations. The Cumbrian Herringbone Weave draws directly on those qualities. The flatweave construction, combined with the inherent resilience of Herdwick wool, produces a carpet with a firm, flat surface that handles high-traffic areas exceptionally well. It is particularly well suited to stairs and landings, where its pattern makes a confident design statement and its construction stands up to the concentrated wear of a staircase.

The colour comes entirely from the natural variation of the wool fleece — no synthetic dyes, no chemical treatments of any kind. The pile is plastic-free. Six colourways carry the names of the Lake District fells that define the breed's home territory — Blencathra, Catbells, Helvellyn, Scafell, Skiddaw and Bowfell — spanning a range of naturally inspired tones from cool greys to deeper, earthier neutrals.

The Cumbrian Herringbone Weave and Cumbrian Loop are made from exactly the same yarn in the same six colourways — a deliberate design decision that makes the two products the ideal pairing for a coordinated whole-home scheme. Use the herringbone to make a feature of the stairs and landing, and carry the same colour through into living rooms and bedrooms in the softer loop construction. The colour continuity between the two creates a natural sense of flow through the home without the rooms feeling identical.

One thing to note on the backing: the flatweave construction of the Cumbrian Herringbone Weave requires a conventional carpet backing rather than the lightweight Envirobac backing used across the rest of the Cumbrian range. This is a straightforward requirement of the flatweave construction rather than a compromise on quality.

As with all natural fibre products, we recommend ordering samples before purchasing — the undyed colourways are best assessed in your own space and under your own lighting conditions, and natural variation between fleece batches means colour can shift subtly over time.
