Choosing a herringbone carpet

A herringbone weave sets short blocks of yarn at right angles to one another, so the pattern reads as a chevron running the length of a room or up a staircase. It gives a floor more structure and character than a plain weave, and the texture helps disguise everyday wear rather than showing it.

Our range covers three natural fibres. Each has its own feel underfoot, and each suits a slightly different space.

Sisal Herringbone

Sisal is one of the hardest-wearing natural plant fibres, which is why the Sisal Herringbone is particularly popular as a stair runner. It works equally well in hallways, landings and living rooms, and comes in five natural shades: Ore, Sienna, Argent, Mercury and Titanium.

Cumbrian Herringbone Weave

For a softer, warmer feel, the Cumbrian Herringbone Weave is a flatweave made from 100% undyed British wool from Herdwick sheep in the Lake District, free from synthetic dyes and chemical treatments. It comes in six colourways (Blencathra, Catbells, Helvellyn, Scafell, Skiddaw and Bowfell) and shares its yarn and colours with the Cumbrian Loop, so you can run herringbone up the stairs and a matching loop across the landing.

Seagrass Herringbone

The Seagrass Herringbone is woven from 100% natural, undyed seagrass fibre. It is characterful and hardwearing, and a good choice for hallways, living rooms and bedrooms.

Where herringbone works best

• Stairs and landings. The pattern runs with the treads and makes a feature of the staircase. See our herringbone stair carpet customer project and our sisal stair runner project.
• Hallways. Sisal and seagrass are tough plant fibres, well suited to the busiest parts of the house.
• Living rooms and bedrooms. Wool is the softer, warmer choice where comfort underfoot matters most.
